At the recent Upstream Celebration, we gathered with Minnesotans from across the state who share a simple but powerful belief: when we care for our home, we shape a better future together. 💙

This year’s Unsung Caretakers reminded us that stewardship takes many forms, from city leadership and innovation to gardening, teaching, and quiet daily actions that ripple outward.

Deb, helped her community reach the highest level in the GreenStep Cities program. She launched a Sustainability Task Force, organizes Mississippi River cleanups, and ensures residents learn about pollinators and waste reduction. Her work proves that local leadership can drive lasting change.

Laura connects people to Minnesota’s natural spaces through free, guided meditations in parks and wild places. Her gentle presence invites others to slow down, notice the world around them, and build gratitude for the land we share.

Bill shows that environmental care and innovation can go hand in hand. Through his companies, he develops affordable ways to clean water, finding solutions that support both industry and the environment.

Steve has been advancing sustainability at Abbott Northwestern Hospital for over 40 years, leading initiatives that reduce waste, improve air quality, and restore native habitat on campus.

Xiem and Rennie bring people together through gardens, tree planting, and neighborhood gatherings that grow both food and community.

Maciej, Valerie, and Beth embody care in everyday life, tending bees, sharing harvests, planting native gardens, and reminding us that small acts add up.

Each of these Minnesotans offers a powerful reminder: stewardship starts with care, and grows through community.

You don’t need a title or a task force to make a difference. You just need to begin with your block, your garden, your neighbors, or your favorite natural place.
