Celebrating Earth Month: How to Get Involved Locally in Minnesota

April is Earth Month—a time to celebrate Minnesota’s natural beauty, take action for our natural places, and connect with others who care about stewardship. Whether you’re looking for a community event, a solo outdoor challenge, or a long-term commitment to caring and sustainability, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

At Upstream, we believe in taking the next step in stewardship—big or small—to care for the places we love. Here are some ideas, local events, and Minnesota-based organizations to help you celebrate Earth Month and make a lasting impact.

Attend a Local Earth Month Event

Communities across Minnesota host Earth Month celebrations that bring people together to learn, volunteer, and take action. Check local nature centers, conservation groups, and city websites for Earth Month happenings.

Take Your Own Stewardship Challenge

If attending an event isn’t an option, consider taking on a personal or family challenge to honor Earth Month:

  • Go Plastic-Free for a Week – Reduce single-use plastics by switching to reusable bags, bottles, and containers.
  • Try a Car-Free Day – Walk, bike, or take public transit to lower your carbon footprint and experience your neighborhood in a new way.
  • Plant for Pollinators – Add native flowers to your yard or community garden.
  • Reduce Energy Use – Unplug electronics, switch to LED bulbs, or explore renewable energy options.

Support Local, Sustainable Businesses

Minnesota is home to many businesses that prioritize environmental responsibility. This Earth Month, consider:

  • Shopping at farmers’ markets and co-ops that source local, organic produce. Find one near you through the Minnesota Grown directory.
  • Eating at sustainable restaurants that reduce food waste and support local farms.
  • Shop at stores for clothing, home goods, and personal care products, such as Tare Market, Minnesota’s first zero-waste store.

Find Your Next Step in Stewardship

Earth Month is a great time to reflect on how we can all be better caretakers of our shared home. If you’re not sure where to start, use Upstream’s Find Your Next tool to discover simple, meaningful actions you can take to make a difference. Whether it’s adopting a storm drain, or joining a conservation group there’s always a next step in stewardship.

Caring for Minnesota, Together

Earth Month is more than a celebration—it’s a reminder that we all have a role in caring for Minnesota’s natural places. Whether you participate in a clean-up, take a personal sustainability challenge, or support local businesses, your actions matter.

How will you celebrate Earth Month this year? Let’s go Upstream—together.
