In the heart of Otter Tail County, Minnesota, nestled among fields, trees, and winding country roads, is a place where gardens begin, families gather, and a deep love for the land is cultivated every day. Grass Roots Garden Center is much more than a greenhouse or nursery, it is a destination where stewardship, community, and generations of knowledge come together to help people grow.
Owned and operated by Tom and Debbie Meinhover and their family, Grass Roots Nursery has become a treasured part of the region. Their commitment extends far beyond selling plants. Every flower, vegetable, herb, fruit tree, shrub, and perennial represents countless hours of care, from selecting seeds and nurturing young plants to helping customers find the perfect additions for their own gardens. Their work reminds us that caring for the land is also caring for one another.
As someone who loves gardening, this has become a special place for my daughter, Zara, and me. Each spring we make the trip to choose heirloom tomatoes, herbs, vegetables, fruit trees, and flowers that will nourish our family throughout the growing season. Those plants eventually become fresh meals shared around our table, herbs preserved for winter soups, and flowers that brighten our home. The experience begins long before we plant the first seed; it begins with the people who have dedicated their lives to growing healthy plants and sharing their knowledge.
For children, Grass Roots feels a little like stepping into a storybook. Zara looks forward to visiting Malcolm, the friendly black cat who wanders the greenhouses, happily accepting pets from visitors. There is Hoper, the welcoming farm dog, playful kittens, curious hens, and Riley the rooster, who proudly escorts guests from greenhouse to greenhouse as if serving as the official tour guide. Children can discover the charming kitty house, marvel at the giant dragonfly sculpture, explore “The Barn” filled with unique treasures, and even choose a special rock to take home as a keepsake. These simple experiences encourage curiosity, exploration, and a connection to nature that cannot be taught from a screen.

For adults, the nursery is equally inspiring. Whether you’re planting your very first garden or expanding an established landscape, the staff offers thoughtful guidance and practical advice. Their selection includes annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, fruit trees, berries, shade trees, flowering shrubs, mulch, compost, soils, and landscaping materials, making it a one-stop destination for gardeners throughout west-central Minnesota. They are known for offering healthy plants, fruit trees, and small berries at prices that make gardening accessible for families.
Places like Grass Roots Garden Center are vital to the future of our rural communities. They are helping preserve knowledge about growing food, planting trees, supporting pollinators, and caring for the landscapes that define our region. Every tree planted offers future shade. Every garden nourishes a family. Every perennial supports bees and butterflies. Every conversation shared between a gardener and a customer passes along knowledge that strengthens our community.
Stewardship is often quiet work. It happens in the early mornings while watering seedlings, in the careful pruning of young trees, and in the patience required to help something grow season after season. Tom, Debbie, their family, and their staff embody that commitment. They have created more than a successful family business; they have created a place where people reconnect with the rhythms of the seasons, discover the joy of growing something with their own hands, and leave inspired to care for the land around them.
In a world that often moves too quickly, Grass Roots Garden Center reminds us to slow down, dig into the soil, plant something with hope, and remember that the smallest seeds often grow into the most meaningful things. We are fortunate to have families like the Meinhovers investing their time, knowledge, and passion into the health of our landscapes and the well-being of our communities. Their work enriches not only our gardens but also the future of West-Central Minnesota.
