Urban & Rural Stewardship Tips to Keep Our Waters Clean
Minnesota’s lakes and rivers are at the heart of our identity. Whether you’re paddling down the Mississippi, fishing at your favorite up-north cabin, or walking the path around Bde Maka Ska, these waters connect us all.
But they need our care. Runoff pollution, invasive species, and shoreline degradation threaten water quality across the state, from rural streams to city storm drains. The good news? Every day, Minnesotans can make a difference. Here are 10 simple ways you can help care for Minnesota’s water this summer, no matter where you live.
1. Adopt a Storm Drain
Urban stormwater flows directly into local waterways, often carrying trash, leaves, and chemicals. By adopting a storm drain and keeping it clean, you help prevent this pollution at the source.
2. Limit Fertilizer Use
Whether you’re managing a city lawn or a rural field, avoid over-fertilizing. Excess nutrients can wash into lakes and rivers, fueling algae blooms and harming aquatic life.
3. Plant Native Plants & Rain Gardens
Swap out grass for native grasses and wildflowers. These deep-rooted plants soak up rainwater and reduce runoff, while providing habitat for pollinators and birds.
4. Pick Up Pet Waste
It may seem small, but pet waste contains bacteria that can contaminate water. Always scoop the poop, even in your backyard.
5. Check Your Septic System
If you live in Greater Minnesota, maintaining your septic system is key to caring for nearby groundwater and lakes. Get it inspected every 3 years to avoid leaks.
6. Use Phosphorus-Free Products
From dishwasher detergent to lawn treatments, choose phosphorus-free options to help prevent nutrient pollution.
7. Leave No Trace on the Water
Whether you’re boating, fishing, or kayaking, pack out all trash and avoid stirring up lake or river sediment, which can release phosphorus into the water.
8. Volunteer for a Water Steward Program
Join a local watershed group or become a certified Water Steward. You’ll learn about caring for water health and get involved in community efforts.
9. Protect Shorelines
Own lakefront property? Avoid mowing to the water’s edge and instead plant a buffer of native vegetation. It filters runoff and prevents erosion.
10. Take the Upstream Pledge
At Upstream, we believe caring for water is caring for our shared future. Pledge to be a steward of Minnesota’s natural places, for the people, places, and generations to come.
Minnesota’s Water Belongs to All of Us
From storm drains in Saint Paul to headwaters in Itasca, our actions ripple outward. You don’t need to be an expert to be a good steward, you just need to care and commit to small changes. Together, we can keep our lakes and rivers clean, thriving, and full of life.
